Having her crumple and give up again takes some of the potential of the scene away--she needed to act in some way. I don't mind him coming back up, but I agree that whole thing needed more space to breathe. At least there's 1 more chapter. They called this one "final chapter," and scared me for a bit, but the note at the end says there's 1 more left.
