She managed to escape the town but her eyes are forever changed bc of the town's curse? Is the mermaid a curse?

Interesting manga but I'm not sure I get the point overall.

Learning to love yourself regardless of "imperfections" is a nice message.

Perhaps if the girl with the birthmark can find people who don't judge her for her appearence so to can the mermaid. Maybe that's the idea here?

It's not rly a 'waste'/might be good 'repellent' for ppl who immediately judge on looks although cosplay aside i wonder if there are ppl who grew up with like freckles/blemishes and judged for it, if they're salty/annoyed that 'freckle stamps'/fake freckles as makeup are a trend in some cases now (although other than anything extreme like self harming i can imagine ppl doing 'makeunders' to look more plain or unappealing to repel ppl who'd be pickup artists or so)

But yeah it'd def be unique/distinct, but she did call it a birthmark rather than like a 'burn scar' or so, but other than being taken a back for a second, i wouldn't be too bothered by it versus "This scar is clearly from someone who gets into fight/dangerous" kinda vibe but you can't rly tell that just by looks either lol unless they 'dress like a delinquent'

although with this girls 'weird eyes' i'd think ppl would just think she's either mixed or wearing some kinda chuuni/cosplay otaku contacts

But seriously I'm just reading it going...hmmmm this sure is a weird fibe manga. That's it. Sometimes a story is deep sometimes it's just hmmm. And if it has meaning.meh. Plus we'll see next chapter if this one was important or had more meaning to it then what was in the text. Sometimes a story is just a story.

And no personally I don't think she's in purgatory. But what the hell do I know? 😁

I don't think I'm smart enough to understand this manga. I don't understand why the eyes get like that, I don't understand the weird brainwashing mind control, I don't understand how the water works or how the people transforming works or how Reiko and the mermaid never banged. It's just too highbrow for me.
That said, it's incredibly atmospheric and I like it a lot. Maybe when it's finished and I reread it, I'll understand it better. The eyes are really freaky though.

I love how different the atmosphere is in this city setting compared to the town—both are bustling with characters and social preconceptions, but there's a subtle difference in the way things feel busy or idyllic, in how the people seem confident or conforming. The mangaka has a way with nuances, I love it.
