This comic has the right to wield its own lore, but in the original Minecraft, I think the reason why piglins don't attack players wearing gold armor isn't greed. If the reason were just a love for gold, they would be more likely to mug a player wearing gold, but they don't. They are afraid of zombies, and knowing that gold can cure this disease makes things clearer. Maybe they see an ungold-wearing otherworlder as a potential source of infection and try to eliminate him/her out of fear.

Sorry, but this makes no sense. The infection that piglins get from the overworld is completely different from the infection that golden apples can cure, so why would they care about that?

Also, their entire society is based on greed. Throwing some gold down will immediately make them lose interest in you.

Wearing gold suggests that you have plenty of gold, and therefore they don't attack you because they don't want to risk losing out on gaining all that gold if you run away.

This is further reinforced by the fact that mining random pieces of gold out in the nether wastelands will make them upset, suggesting they don't really care about whether or not you're a threat to them as much as they care about whether or not you'll give or take gold from them.
