By chance I read this the same day as the first chapter of Home at the Horizon, a modern manga in a similar setting, and visually this seems so much better it's wild. The paneling, the simple but effective art style, the way character panels combine with landscapes and narration, it's all in a league above. I'm not even generally a fan of this 80's style art, but comparing it directly the newer stuff seems like an amateur's work.
