On this type of hazing, while kinda dickish I understand it. Since you want to see if the newbies won't run from battle or freeze up which can have massive consequences. Its a decent way to see the newbie's mettle, and if they get scared off then the adventurer lifestyle is not for them.

Agreed, it helps that there's really no big malice about it. It's the new guy, you gotta see what he's made of and whether or not they'll be needing a reality check or a helping hand.

Yeah, the fact that it's taking place in an official training ring with spectators who are unfazed by it rather than in the middle of the guild tavern or a back alley really helps sell that it's all pretty bog standard and the vets are really just, well, vetting the newbies to see if they'll die on their first quest.
