Real. Being known as one of the particularly stingy translation groups doesn't help them at all. At least they tend to stick to certain types of series; I clicked on this one just to verify my suspicion that they were the translators, simply based on the cover lol

Fortunately, most of these stories (fantasy, romance, sometimes isekai whatever) are pretty mid, but there are a few that piqued my interest at first that I ended up dropping because I couldn't find any other places to read them. A good story is a nice thing to find, but my frustration/disappointment with the way it was released outweighed my desire to read it.

I went to their website and, while there are several series that just have 2-3 of the latest chapters paywalled, there are some that have way too many. One series has 25 chapters out right now and 11 are paywalled. Another has 20 chapters and 12 are paywalled. If they were an official publisher and licensed translator, partnering with the authors to make sure the creator is credited and paid is one thing, but to do that for their own translation work with no obvious indication/disclaimer that any of the profits go the original authors is pretty bad. Worse, it's one of those coin systems, where the readers have to buy coins and spend, per chapter, to read them. Most paywalled chapters are 50 coins, but some are 75, 85, or even 100 coins. Some of the 100-coin chapters were uploaded 2-3 weeks ago. 1 coin = $0.01, so it doesn't sound that bad, but let's look at the series with 25 chapters, 11 paywalled. For that series in particular, each paywalled chapter is 100 coins. That's $1 per chapter which means I'd have to pay $11.00 to read them all. Yet none of the money they make supports the original creator, aside from the one copy of the raws they acquired to translate with (to my knowledge).

Even if they're actually supporting the original creators in ways that I can't see since I'm not on their Discord, they're also stingy about upload consistency. They have already removed the paywall on a few chapters for the series I'm referring to, but they haven't uploaded them to MangaDex at all. I get that they want people to go to their website, but the platform that these translator groups use has a really unintuitive reader and, if they're being offered as free anyway, I'd rather just have them available here. And they do that for every single series.

I get that they need money to fund their projects and what not, and given how many series they translate, they're clearly making some. Again, I'm curious about how much of the money that they (and other groups like them) make get actually goes to the original authors. I know that making high quality translations is a lot of work (translating, typesetting, redrawing, etc.), and translators deserve to get paid, but I don't think this is the way to do that. Additionally, there are no author and/or artist credits for each series on their website. It might appear on the cover page on the first chapter, but I think that that credit should be shown on the listing, just like how MangaDex does it.

Anyway, I wrote all of this to say: yeah, I see Art Lapsa, I go back.

I agree, like I don't think its wrong for translation groups to want money for their work. Its certainly a lot of work. However, it should be something like they have a paypal or something people can donate to if they want, but these guys want to do it the scummiest way.

The worst thing for me is they do tend to translate the stories I tend to enjoy the most, so seeing works I'll never be able to read because as you said about 50% of available chapters are paywalled. I think I'm gonna just not even start a series if I see they are the translators. Hopefully mangadex does something about them but who know.s
