its definitely fine to just admit to treason if you're planning to kill the guy afterwards. there is no reason to do this. the only reason he does it is because author is too stupid to write a believable plot and mc needs a goal for next life to move the plot forward. there are so many tropes and cliches that could have been used instead like overhearing a conversation with an underling or coming across a secret letter. literally anything would have been more believable than this option
