I always found it hard to believe Paul cared for his wife since you know he cheated on her and fathered another child.

I always found it hard to believe Paul cared for his wife since you know he cheated on her and fathered another child.
Its been ages since then and understandable that details forgotten. it was Lilia that had succumbed to temptation, and seduced Paul. It was Rudeus who had made up the story that it was Paul that had taken advantage of her.
Still not completely exonerate Paul, but small details do matter.

I'm not defending cheaters, far from it, but I do believe that in some polygamic societies that existed within human history, there was true love and caring shared between different parties.

It might have become that, but he did cheat on her originally.

while yes, what you said is the "accurate" description, it's also true that Paul is a womanizer. He doesn't get tired of his current wife, he just can't be tamed with only one either. He knows what he did was wrong, but still did it anyway, because that's very in character for him.
