Did you miss what did happen to his mother?

She had two options:

1. Hold her child and die together.
   • Chance of certain death: 100%
2. Toss her child into the river, where he has an above zero chance of survival.

Her saying "please live" is a prayer for the child's survival.

I kind of doubt it bought any time at all.
If arrows were a concern, jump over in a way that puts her on top of him, so any arrows hits her in the back instead of him.
No one would have bothered jumping into the water after them, not even the horniest bastards.

If she jumped with him they'd be pursuing them to wherever they'd end up at, instead they were busy lynching the mom so they wouldn't care about the boy

I'm fairly certain they would be far more concerned about having their fun with the other villagers possibly still alive, looting, and pillaging, than to bother following what they'd more likely than not deem already dead the moment they jumped over the edge of the bridge.
