Where the hell did you get the multiplication?!

Oscar is x years old.
Mother (M) is x + 3
Father (F) is M + 5
F = 42
Doing the substitutions, you get

42 = M + 5 -> 42 = x +3 +5 -> 42 - 8 = x -> 34 = x

This is the same level of "getting in your own head to miss the picture as" as "The lily pad thst doubles in size every day eventually fills a pond perfectly, what day is the lily pad half the size of the pond?"

Based on that the numbers probably are right and the text wrong...

Glad I'm not the only one. I genuinely got upset seeing the 2 x part because I'm thinking "where the fuck did that come from?"

I glossed over 9 x 19 = 101 a couple chapters back because maybe they made a typo with 0 instead of 8, but this one was just so simple. It also looks like they missed a line to make it correct. There had to be a third person since she there was the 2x part and the answer is 34 but she comes out with 17, which is half that. So maybe an older sibling or uncle or something was twice his age, then mom is 3 years older and dad 5 years older than that.

I think the author might be bad at math. Hilarious considering they wrote powers that rely on math so this might not be the last time we see mistakes like this.

Must be a mistranslation
I was thinking the whole time all you needed to read was the first half
