In the raws, Xiao Jiu calls her 姐姐 which means big sister. I don't remember if it was explicit, but for me they are both snakes so likely siblings or some common parenthood in their clan. It can be honorific though.

Considering how laid back the setting is, I was surprised the gang made a big deal out of a bird's voice. The comedy of defying gender expectations hits weaker in a queer milieu. Let alone a monster subculture. When the comedy isn't played up, it's bland and borderline preachy for a diverse group to react the exact same way. Not the worst heteronormativity trope, and it's good enough it wasn't mean-spirited, but it was pretty lazy and discordant.

I trust the author, it was pretty good so far, but this sounds like a bunch of witches ruining their vacation to me

I understand your opinion. From my pov, Maria's boss being the "First Vampire" is also a (very) big deal. That's why Qin Yu's mom isn't trying to rush things (ch155) for the investigation.

Maria & Xiao Lan are pretty safe being on the boss' private island. I don't believe the witches clan'd make a massive raid there haha.
