And then what he interpreted as ‘disappointed looks’ were actually ‘my son keeps talking to empty space and I’m concerned about his mental health’ looks, or even more depressing, ‘my son can see his dead mother and I do believe it’s real, god I wish I could see her too’ looks.

Could be, but in the previous chapters Haru explained that his mother was bedridden, so I think she definitely was alive at that time, at least he would be aware that the mother is not here but he can see her, otherwise he wouldn't be talking about her as if she is alive. Also, he only started to see ghosts recently, as Taya told him, you hang around the supernatural, you start to see it more.

My guess that the mother is a ghost now, and she died while Haru was away, and he didn't know, since he went radio silence with his family. I still wonder what exactly happened to her that her face got those scars, she was bedridden and unable to speak, AND his father would blame Haru, an infant at that time, for this?

P.S. A guess: Haru caused a fire in their house as a kid, mother saved him from the fire, but suffered burns and carbon monoxide poisoning, and left bedridden after that.

Ah right, I must’ve either missed or forgotten the part where he wasn’t seeing ghosts til recently. Because yeah, I took the fact that he said she wouldn’t speak back and just smile at him as a kid as evidence to support her ghost nature, and he just didn’t realise she was a ghost every time he spoke to her.

The mother has burnmarks it seems, i have to wonder what happened.

Considering the age might have been burns from the fire bombing of Japan in WW2. It was far more deadly than the two nuclear bombs because a lot of houses were not flame resistant and tightly packed. Think California wildfires in city on hardcore.

I don't think anyone pointed it out but it feel like the light came back in the father eyes once he saw it was his son, first it was pitch black and the next page there is a little white spot in each of his eyes
