It was never retconned tho as we see in the early chapter cam was using a woman bathroom and we see kitty there

In one of the first few chapters (~5) ,she's seen in the background in the women's restroom when Camilla cries (basically the chapter after she's introduced ,immediately after something easily seen as being mean spirited we get the shot of her crying in the restroom to show that Camilla is actually a sweet girl) and she's seen a few other times, but that was the only real hint that Kitty was a girl... Her full length hoodie became this mid drift showing thing and she's apparently now wearing basically booty shorts , so yeah there's been alterations to her design
