It do be like that
just for clarity on this sort of thing. When you go to a therapist, they don't prescribe you pills thinking that's the solution. A big part of therapy is just getting you in the right mental state to actually tackle your problems and depressed people are the least equipped emotionally to handle depression. The pills temporarily help with depression long enough you to start being active in improving your situation.

Man, I can already see her mother coming back to take her being a drama plot in the future

Unrelated to the chapter, this is me whenever I see Darling's OC:

You assume this will be able to run that long?

which chapter does it say they're cousins

It could be a translation thing as Sutatekken mentioned, but in chapter 27 (both translation) refer to Tanuki as her "relative" or "cousin" depending on which one you look at. In either case Higashioka, who presumably did his research into her background, recognizes that they are related in some way. In chapter 28 he mentions how her biological mother had ramped up the physical abuse during COVID so she moved in with "relatives" (both translations use relatives) and monologues about how he wants to separate her from "blood relatives" while showing a picture of Tanuki.

But in the most recent chapter she refers to Tanuki's family as "The Tanukis" and the implication is it was more disconnected than it seemed so I may just be misinterpreting it.

It's not about a physical pill. It's more like a reddish kind of pill.
The problem is that your metaphor fails because of actual literal pills that help with mental health. Additionally, especially for minority groups, there are actual groups with more power that are a very direct cause for their issues: you can't exactly look inwards when governments are enacting anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

The brother is a really good guy. I like seeing him try to help his sister when the whole world wants to fuck her :ROFLMAO:.

So she didn't want her bad rep to get onto tanuki, but she hurt him by saying that in the first place... Damng.

That's where I failed with my translation. A friend invited her to her house to hang out, but in reality she tricked her into going to a party with alcohol.
Did you update it or something? Because when I read it yesterday, it was clear she was invited/tricked.
