Okay this is interesting. I’m not sure if this is unique to this translation, but I went back to check the anime episode where that conversation between Jiraya and Kakashi happened, and the anime never stated that that conversation happened before the ”real chunnin” exams started. So I was always under the impression that Naruto just happened to meet Jiraya by chance and that Kakashi was just being negligent. However, this translation makes Kakashi seem as if he had already anticipated Naruto would meet Jiraya, so there was no need to train him himself. That detail actually matters a lot in how Kakashi is perceived by the reader, if its not there, Kakashi becomes a negligent sensei. Because if he really only had Ebisu for Naruto, Naruto would’ve gotten diced during the chunnin exams. Naruto was only able to perform as well as he did because he met Jiraya and trained under him. I might have to check the official translation for that too, if I can be bothered to pay for the subscription again lol.
