Really wish we got more on that mission Sakumo failed because just from the little we are told about we very easily take on the view that Sakumo did the right thing. We don’t know who these companions were or the importance of the mission(meaning the stakes). Right now we just see the companions as ungrateful because there is no more added context. Sakumo could very easily be made to look weak depending on context. Obviously based on themes presented previously in the story we can make the assumption that as the reader, you’re supposed to see this as Sakumo did the right thing and that him being disgraced is just part of the cruelty of the ninja world. This however, gets eventually contradicted because of the whole will of fire and prioritizing the well being of the village.
Like how the story makes Itachi look like a hero for what he did for the village instead of a victim of a system that needs to be changed.
Sakumo’s character could very well be another one of those inconsistencies in the story but we don’t ever get his backstory explored.
