No, it's just a running trend I've seen in manga/anime. Baka and Test, Komi Can't Communicate, this manga, to name a few. A lesbian is obsessed with a girl who isn't interested, knows this, but will do anything to be with them, involving directly interfering with the girl's love interest, frequently in disturbing ways often played off for laughs. This idea of selfishness of fruitlessly pursuing someone at everyone's expense. It's just a clique that I'm a bit tired of.
