Was the lame dub reference in place of Z's catchphrase really necessary?
It really depends on what you're looking for. Frankly I was trying to embody the spirit of Neko Majin which is inherently goofier than Dragon Ball. My translation modus operandi is this, I don't try to be 100% direct in the process but I don't want to veer too far away from the original manga, basically, I do what the modern English dubs of Dragon Ball do and much like the modern English dubs, it's done with the full knowledge that a way to consume the original is there. If you prefer the old translation then honestly go for it, read that to your heart's content and appreciate it, especially considering the history there for the scanlation groups that picked it up, they exist to make the content readable with all their references and such completely intact. This is primarily done for the sake of not only giving the translation an upgrade (At least one I'm proud of since that's of course entirely subjective.) but also in a way to just have fun with it which is no different from what many translations do since translation is about capturing the spirit of a work more than it is about directly translating everything word for word. So with that in mind? I figured a variation on his catchphrase that references the dub is corny sure but it fits the silly tone of the manga.
