I've been wondering about something lately. In manga, it's common for characters to be afraid of ghosts or have a genuine belief in the supernatural, like how it's perfectly normal for the nephew here to say, "my friend has spiritual powers" and everyone else just takes him at his word. I think that must be an exaggeration, but is it actually common for people to be very superstitious? Or is this kind of thing so common in fiction for no other reason besides giving the author an easy way to make a character behave a certain way?

Ah, my mom’s superstitious about ghosts and sometimes calls for me to accompany her when she has to go somewhere like our house’s basement at night, so I think at least that level of belief pops up here and there. I also know there are some people who still ask for stuff like exorcisms in the countryside too, though I only know of it from reading anecdotes in the newspaper. I imagine it depends on your country.

Everything in most media is usually exaggerated but I would suspect maybe in this case not as much as we'd except. Think about it in terms of religion, Buddhism doesn't disallow ghosts or spirits, Shintoism heavily involves them. Consider how many hard core religious people are around you and how it effects their perception of reality then apply that to Japan. Someone who believes in spiritual powers and accepts somebody has them is really no different than a faith healer or prosperity bible belief.
