Hello, I am new here. I don't know if I'm going to be really active here, but I would like to ask about some point of the functioning of the site I don't understand. Many of these questions are out of curiosity, but answers might as well come as handy

How can one create or join a group for scanlation ? Does one have to belong in a group to upload works ? Can you be in multiple groups at the same time, can you change groups ?

What are upload restrictions ? In the rules it basically says "what you can't download", but it also says "An inactive group will have all of its upload restrictions lifted and its leader and members will no longer have automatic editing and deleting permissions to the chapters associated with the group."
Also, in a group information page, you can see "upload restrictions" with an open or closed lock. What does it mean ?

If I find some raws in a random website, can I just translate them, upload them here ? I don't know if this is allowed.
Also I wouldn't know who the scanner was, so I can't have his approval or credit him if I make a credit page, would that be okay ?
Generally speaking, where can I find the person who scanned (and probably cleaned) the raws (their info), instead of downloading it from a shady website ? I don't know anything about them.
Speaking of which, how famous is this site ? Many "manga reader" sites directly steal from scanlation works, and without the credit page, no one would've have guessed who did all the work. Are some "manga reader" site exclusively provided by one scanlation community, like this one for instance ? Is this place a more "closed", unknown community (better imho)?

I have noticed some user created their own website using the mangadex.com domain. How does that work ?

Well, that's a lot of interrogation points in one message. Anyway, thank you in advance for your answers. As you may see, I have zero experience in this field, I've been for a long time just a consumer of the "manga reader" sites without being able to find where scanlators directly do their business.

>How do you create a group
https://mangadex.org/chapter/450321

>Do you have to belong to the group to upload their works
No

>Can you be in multiple groups
Yes

>What are upload restrictions
Being unable to upload. If someone decides to lock their group, it means only group members can upload to it. Inactive groups get their ability to lock their group removed to allow users to upload their works. Groups are considered inactive after 6 months with no release (Rule 2.4).

>If I find some raws in a random website, can I just translate them, upload them here?
You've just described scanlation. Yes.

>Also I wouldn't know who the scanner was
It's not required to credit the person who scanned the raws

>Speaking of which, how famous is this site?
We're the second most popular site in the US and fourth in the world in terms of manga aggregators. Popular, but not as much as we'd like.

>Are some "manga reader" site exclusively provided by one scanlation community, like this one for instance ? Is this place a more "closed", unknown community (better imho)?
There is no other major aggregator that scanlators upload to aside from MangaDex. KissManga, Mangakakalot, MangaRock, etc etc all rip from us, scanlators, or official sources. They don't have an upload feature at all to my knowledge. Smaller communities don't exist either, the next level would just be the scanlator's websites themselves.

>I have noticed some user created their own website using the mangadex.com domain. How does that work?
We host WordPress blogs for scanlators for free. Join our Discord, sign up on https://mangadex.com/, DM ixlone with the e-mail address you used to sign up, the URL you want your subdomain to be, and the title of the blog itself.

Pretty sure most of the answers are in the site help manga, you can read that for most of the answers.

What are upload restrictions ?
If a group didn't set any upload restrictions (Aka groups that don't really give a fck or dead groups), it means that anyone can upload chapters in their group's name (even if you aren't from the group).

If I find some raws in a random website, can I just translate them, upload them here ? I don't know if this is allowed.
If you find some raws from another site and scanlate it (translate in whatever language, clean and typeset it) you can upload it here (this site just doesn't accept raws and official releases) (No, really... I think a lot of scanlators just torrent the raws from somewhere to scanlate it)

Also I wouldn't know who the scanner was, so I can't have his approval or credit him if I make a credit page, would that be okay ?
That's for you to decide, but I'd rather try to find out who the scanlator is, ask them if it's ok to redistribute/retranslate

Generally speaking, where can I find the person who scanned (and probably cleaned) the raws (their info), instead of downloading it from a shady website ?
Normally the group would have put their own credits on their scanlation, and I don't really know what you mean by shady site

Speaking of which, how famous is this site ?
People praise it as Batoto version 2, so pretty famous and liked for scanlators and readers. Also it's ad-free, why would people dislike it. The fame will get there

Many "manga reader" sites directly steal from scanlation works, and without the credit page, no one would've have guessed who did all the work. Are some "manga reader" site exclusively provided by one scanlation community, like this one for instance ? Is this place a more "closed", unknown community (better imho)?
We can't really do shit about bots stealing scanlated manga from other leech sites, and yeah, a lot of them strip the credit page out so there won't be a way to figure out the scanlators that did the project. Some scanlators put their credits in the margins of a manga page, others don't. If not, you can try and see if there is some info in mangaupdates.com

Ehm, about the one scanlation community, you might have gone to the website of a scanlation group. Maybe that's why it looked like a one scanlation community? There are also some scanlators that prefer to upload it on their own site.

This place is an open community if i understood what you mean. People share that they want to share, i guess?

I have noticed some user created their own website using the mangadex.com domain. How does that work ?
A blog to host some stuff that you can use if you want. I haven't tried it.
Try to register and see, I guess. It shouldn't be too hard.

Well, that was fast, thank you kizuna rudolph, slug no hoshi, best girl admin and protip DAN. (you all have interesting profilepics)
My bad, I didn't notice the tutorial manga. I'm reading it now.
I am kind of puzzled by the group restrictions, who would want someone else to do things in your own group ?
About Plykiya's answer, I didn't mean "belong to the group to upload their works", i rather meant "do you have to belong in any group at all to upload anything ?". There may be a nuance here.
Also "shady sites" was for the sites full of (outdated) rapidgator links or the questionable torrent sites I've seen many times.
I didn't know this place was so nice (i didn't know this place at all), I don't have any plan now, but I may as well try and upload something here.
Yoroshiku!

You don't actually have to belong to a group, but you need to assign your upload to a group. Solo scanlators may create a group with their username (that's perfectly fine). Alternatively, you could assign it to "no group" if you really don't want to create a group.

Regarding group restrictions, yeah in an ideal world no one would be uploading to groups that's not their own, but people do strange things.

@guyjin2 By shady sites, you mean for getting the raws? You can just go to
Code:
nyaa.se
or
Code:
https://nyaa.pantsu.cat
for it.
If I can't find it there then the last resort would be those shady sites, yes. But you can just set up a virtual machine and download it via there. If you do get a virus or something, you can just wipe that VM (Need protection for those, y'kno). Or get the virus and the raws, just get the raws from the VM and leave that virus to rot in there.

Hello everyone, I started using the site a little... But I'm confused with the search results.
I left the "Manga title" text box empty, and selected "English" language and there are only 210 results, why is that?
Also, I searched each format independently, and I never find a great number of results (2,805 for 4-Koma and 420 for web comic), but if I search the letter A for manga title there are 27,739 results.
Is it because the manga title category is mandatory ? How can I see all the entries for one or many tags ?
How can see the total number of manga in here ?

How can I read an episode from a magazine issue, for instance the Time Kirara 2019-02 issue. Is it possible to make a search like that ? I've seen it labeled in titles sometimes, but I guess there are no restrictions for this.

Also, I was wondering if you could download a manga from this site. I've seen some users posting the manga, and a download link in their blog or group info.
And, can you upload another scanlation which isn't your own here ? (basically stealing someone else's work)

Sorry for disturbing you and thank you in advance for your answers !

>I left the "Manga title" text box empty, and selected "English" language and there are only 210 results, why is that?
"English" only has 210 results because those are series that were originally published in English, such as original creations by our own users. Not the language of scanlation.

>Also, I searched each format independently, and I never find a great number of results (2,805 for 4-Koma and 420 for web comic), but if I search the letter A for manga title there are 27,739 results.
If you see a result such as "27,739" that's due to a bug with pagination. The displayed results are correct when you search for any tag, the total number will just be wrong.

>Is it because the manga title category is mandatory ?
Adding a title isn't mandatory.

>How can I read an episode from a magazine issue
There is no specific way to find a magazine issue, but if you find something in the alt name it's possible to find the series by searching it.

>I was wondering if you could download a manga from this site.
There is no native method to download from the website, that's why groups host their own download links on their blogs.

>Can you upload another scanlation which isn't your own here?
I mentioned that in my first post. You can upload to any scanlation group that isn't locked on MangaDex. If they want to claim their group and lock it, they have the freedom to do so.

Well, I'll just answer what I can

I left the "Manga title" text box empty, and selected "English" language and there are only 210 results, why is that?
Cuz what you were searching for wasn't "English language" but it was more a "Originally made in English", compared to the "Originally made in JPN" the English ones pales.

Also, I searched each format independently, and I never find a great number of results (2,805 for 4-Koma and 420 for web comic), but if I search the letter A for manga title there are 27,739 results.
Lel, 2.8k in 4-koma isn't a lot? If you search for "A" that means you are searching for a manga title that contains the letter "A". It'll probably shock you, but most words contains vowels, sometimes even more than one!

How can I read an episode from a magazine issue, for instance the Time Kirara 2019-02 issue. Is it possible to make a search like that ?
Well, you can use the mangaupdates link to check for that, most manga has a link to mangaupdates

Also, I was wondering if you could download a manga from this site. I've seen some users posting the manga, and a download link in their blog or group info.
Nopes, if you really want to download it, you can just do that on their sites. Or use some kind of app like tachiyomi if you're using a mobile

And, can you upload another scanlation which isn't your own here ? (basically stealing someone else's work)
Yeah, if we wait for the group to upload here, it'll take forever. But if the group requests to not to do that, then you can't (or shouldn't). Also, there are also upload restrictions a group that can set (like only members of the group can upload). Also if you're gonna upload, make sure you don't strip the credit pages out (Don't act like mangaf*x or the other leech sites) and upload it with the correct group

The way I download my manga is that, using the chrome app on my phone, I'm able to click & hold on the chapter I want to download to get a menu. I click "download link" and everything is downloaded. Note that I set my options to longstrip rather than single page so that all the pages are preloaded.

Okay, I got everything now. You all replied really fast again, thanks.
Also, what I meant for the searching part was that the sum of all the ~10 formats (if there were as many results for 4-koma as web comic there wouldn't be any problem) didn't amount for the search of the letter A, which should be at least less than the sum of all the formats. I wasn't really surprised manga titles contain the letter A lol

Formats aren't mandatory.
Many manga won't have any format tags.
Format tags are to mention special characteristics with certain series.
If it has no format tags it's your normal standard manga series. Take a random example: Naruto.
