Because it allows the author to write moments like the one on page 11, where our main characters find a lot of empathy for each other due to how they both feel broken by this horrible thing that happened to them during childhood. Or the one on page 17 where Wakano decides to help Tsutomu to get some form of closure by confronting his rapist, something that has never been an option for her.
Like, the use of rape as a plotpoint here does not feel gratuitous to me, it is central to the themes and the character arcs of the story. I don't understand how having Wakano's childhood trauma be inflicted by some other horrific scenario would make for a better plot.

Feels like it’s being handled a little heavy handed; like the author read some first hand account somewhere and thought “Wow, dark, I wanna make something like that!” - but doesn’t have anything to actually lean on but that vague feeling
