A 'control system' seems too convenient and a bit of a cop out to the whole situation if you ask me.

Yeah, this seems the classic "what can go wrong" situation, and usually everything goes wrong. Tateyama is not only a scumbag, he's probably more dangerous than he seems.

On the flip side, the existence of the dream machine as perfect as the one in the story and Maki's ability to simply alter it to its present capabilities felt like a cop-in to the conflict, so a cop-out doesn't seem like much of a problem.
