Yep, the machine is pretty much a drug. Great to see at least one person that was helped by it though.

Addictive...unless you keep having nightmares like Akari's father and Uchida, though. It seems there are some strong-willed individuals like Maki who, despite using the machine, aren't addicted to it, but most of people in this story clearly are "weak".
