Chapters like this are presumably why professional translations are choosing not to redraw sound effects any more - this was very tedious to do, and I'm pretty terrible at it anyway. If I could start this project again, maybe I'd just subtitle them instead...
While I like elements of all the stories in this collection, it's clearly the longer ones which are more effective at conjuring the weird tone of Akuma Nisei. While Mermaid Meuniere hews more towards the melancholy, this story (and Delivery Hell, the final and most successful story in the collection) brings in more of the slightly macabre humour that I think Shiba uses effectively in her serialised work.
For all of the annoyance of translating a million sound effects that made me want to throw the computer out the window, the "suicide" sequence is very clever in its escalating silliness while still putting Majima in an element of peril.
