I really enjoyed this manga. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish for a darker ending. With the princesses crimes being discovered and her being punished or her actually destroying the kingdom with her gluttony

Awesome! Ending is perfect for this manga. If it was darker or serious it would have been in dissonance with manga tone. Author has found this fine balance between darkness, insanity and black comedy and ending is really fitting. Besides, it's not like Era did much wrong, just ate already dead fish. And she is not even fish herself, they are even different species, so she not really needs to atone or suffer more than she already had.
