Still don't get why those "friends" were so pissed with him hanging out with the girl

They're a bunch of imbeciles who think they're somebody, they only pursue her out of self-interest, and they can't accept or tolerate anyone genuinely close to them. The irony is that these imbeciles are on the same pedestal as the protagonist. In short, hypocrisy.

Because for the type of vapid people she attracts, image is everything. They know they're not friends, they're just close to her because they're popularity-hungry vultures a rank below her in the school's hierarchy. And her befriending a bottom rung loner, upsets this hierarchy and puts their positions in jeopardy. They're friends by proximity, so they need to maintain that proximity and scare off anyone who tries to get in the way.

And I really hope that if there's a manga, it will change that cliché, this story of a rich girl and a poor boy. I really hope that the MC is also from an important family but lives with an inferiority complex; that way the story is better. Both have everything except identity.
