The sad part about this "what if" is that if the two of them had hooked up and gotten friendly back then, Mirei might have found satisfaction in that and never done her gyaru glowup, which would have deprived her of her current set of friends. Your life is the result of your experiences and how you react to them after all.

But I do have to wonder if this is actually relevant to the plot (we're early on in the festival, maybe they actually meet before it's done) or if the author just threw this in here for the hell of it.

No matter the fluff, the Japanese society seems stuffy and overbearing to me. Yes, they can be polite and full of manners. At the same time, they overthink with too much considerations that they dare not to do what they want. Oh, what if I disturb them, what if I become a nuisance, I'd better not, it's better to stay here, in my own bubble. If I don't interact with anyone, I disrupt nothing. What a lonely world...

It's nice to see how much growth Mirei has made, even if the "what if?" is a little bittersweet.

Life is a series of paths, never leading to one correct conclusion. Perhaps Mirei would've been friends with that girl, never having her gyaru awakening, and that door would be shut. What a strange thing, our lives are. Are we the choices we make, or are we just a mix of circumstances?
