Ken seems to have studied only Japanese history feverishly because if he knew what Europe was doing at the time he would be very afraid of them.

Pretty sure it's Food history he feverishly studied. The Japanese history that he seems to know are most likely taught in school. For example, just like how Americans know how Lincoln dies, most Japanese person know how Nobunaga dies. And why wouldn't he know more about Japanese history than European history? He's Japanese and his dad seems to specialize in Japanese history.
