Glad we finally got the realization though I suppose I still struggle somewhat as well to understand Mitsuhides motives. Thank you for your hard work and diligent efforts on the series

Mitsuhide cares more about Nobunaga's reputation than his ideals. While Nobunaga has a terrible reputation among his enemies, among his allies he is seen as a visionary and just Lord, if unconventional. If he were to lead the war against China (Ming), he would be seen as a bloodthirsty tyrant by all.

Mitsuhide doesn't want that, so he'll kill him while he has a good reputation and take the tittle of Tyrant for himself.

Ironically by doing so he allows Nobunaga's surviving enemies to write history for themselves and ruin Nobunaga's reputation for centuries to come.

Even a series so focused on humanizing historical figures, can't overlook how insane bushido conceptions of honor were.

Nobunaga is probably one of the most depressed people in this series. Despite all his wealth and power he doesnt have anyone who can share in his visions and dreams or understands what he wants to say. Not his retainers nor his family.

The only one who comes close is Ken, which is probably why he gives him so much latitude in doing random things like fucking going AWOL without so much as a word. Oh he’ll be pissed when Ken gets back no doubt(because he realizes no matter what bullshit life throws at Ken, he always tries to make it back to Nobunaga. Which is why he said to Ken that he doesn’t see him ever betraying him willingly after he came back from the Takeda camp after Shingen died), but he’ll probably understand if Ken says he had found someone relating to his past. Still pissed though.

This is all very much conjecture, as even today no one knows exactly why Mitsuhide did what he did. He also attempted to claim the title of shogun afterwards, indicating that he most likely attacked Nobunaga to gain acclaim.
