Sadly, it's not! Sure, I think those guys are all knobs, but that's not where it comes from.

The cable guys (as mentioned above) absolutely think you can get better audio by strapping $15000 spiritually attuned quantum crystals to your power cables or using $10000 energonium enriched ethernet cables to make the 1s skinnier and the 0s rounder.

The dial guys think you can get richer, fuller, more 'hyperreal' sound by using $20000 quantum spiritually attuned white oak volume / tuning / device knobs.

I think you can see some patterns here. They're not really audiophiles in the old or even literal sense, they're just wanking over scammy expensive hardware and seeing who can one-up each other on how stupid and expensive it is.
