Most people nowadays don't care but rich and powerful people still want to find spouses with the same power and status for their children.
BTW, in feudau Japan, it was very strict when it came to status based marriage. Samurai class wasn't allowed to marry those from lower status. They can make them concubines, but not as legal wife.
