lmao oh no
normal people assuming that the tension and dysfunction is just “part of the bit” to sell papers…

Kurita slowly realizing that maybe she shouldn’t join in the group beatings of Yamaoka every chance she gets and that Yamaoka might like “women who are nice to him”

Has the name always been written as Niki in this version of translation? The Ala Carte version had it written as Futaki, but I forgot if it's different here.

Yup, I mentioned it in the last chapter's thread. Basically, even though Viz calls her Futaki, all other Japanese media pronounces her name as Niki, so I went with that for consistency.

Oh I accidentally missed a chapter. I see.
Yeah, 二木 is more naturally read as Niki IMO, I wonder why Viz went with Futaki.

Yeah.

While Yamaoka himself isn't a saint, sometimes I do think that the amount of beating he gets can be too much, which makes me actually feel bad for him and definitely not for his peers.

Man, Yuzan is a person of duality, huh?

He's right in the sense that people absolutely shouldn't eat endangered animals (although the bird itself is luckily in the "Least Concern" status right now), but the way he delivers it is so ass since he couldn't help but also mercilessly berate Yamaoka at the same time for failing to realize the bird visually.

I mean, the point of the series is he almost always delivers it in a way that spurs Yamaoka to improve himself. The real douche move is not telling the others as soon as the food came, though - they had no chance of recognizing the bird, and might have wanted to avoid eating forbidden birds if they had gotten the warning, but for Kaibara everything is about testing Yamaoka

"He's right, but he's a gigantic ass" pretty much sums up Kaibara's character. It does make things more dramatic (which is fun for me, as his translator), but he's definitely not someone you'd want to emulate.

Honestly, he tends to remind me of Gordon Ramsay a lot, and the toxic kitchen culture he's helped popularize. I don't think Kariya did that on purpose though, he's clearly drawn direct inspiration from Rosanjin, who is similarly temperamental.
