Tanabata is the holiday where a lot of the shounen/shoujo romance manga get their plots moved forward when someone confesses to another. You know, the one where they're dressed in summer yukatas and slippers, eat soba and candied fruit sticks and kiss under the fireworks.
The slips of paper tied to the bamboo trees are called "tanzaku".

It's easy to forget but it's insane how they spend years and even over a decade down there. To the point they completely get used to it, that it is their world and only world now. Not even a desire or hope to get out.
I know it's a gag manga and all but with all the money they spend on just outings Ootsuki and Co should've long have since been able to leave permanently. But they don't.

So much forbidden lore just dropped, it feels like after weeks of somewhat normal meals I got hooked up to a guzzler full of protein and peanut butter

And it is delish
man, I know Teiai will probably never fall until the end of the series...
but if someone shot Hyoudou do you think the entire company would just collapse in on itself?
The company would probably be in some disarray but adapt

The underground though... Man

Big fish in a small pond theory, perhaps? Free food, free board (Foreman private room), stable work and you get to go out on leave whenever you want. Personally, the best times in my life were when I had structure and my days were predictable.

True, technically!
Also, I'd say that the Foreman and his cronies aren't "big fish little pond", they're crabs in a bucket-but they profit from it. By keeping others down on the behalf of those that exploit them-by being the willing tools of oppression-they benefit and flourish in ways they never could in actual society.

There was a thread earlier on /a/ where people were talking about Kaiji and how this entire thing was about classism and power structures. One anon, under no circumstances, would admit that this was the case. Really wished you there to convince him otherwise. Every chapter I read or scan re-iterates the theme.

not sure about the others, but the actual Kaiji chapter mentioned Ootsuki specifically don't want to go out. He's happy underground as a foreman, and with the personality shown in this manga (e.g, the marriage chapter) I can see it.

What's going on with the first 9 chapters?
They were adapted in the Tonegawa anime and the group before me skipped them. This is probably the right choice for now since there's 45ish chapters ahead while the first 9 can be watched in full HD and dolby atmos (TM) surround sound. If you can wait 3~4 more months I'll probably turn around and do them for completion’s sake.

Oh nice, Saki is a blast if you're into superpower mahjong (or absurd amounts of fanservice)
Oh hey, I like both of these things (y)

I feel bad saying this now since there was semi-interesting commentary on social progress in the chapter. But I can't wait to meet the Teiai boss when I read the main series. I feel like his sense of humor is, uh. I get it. LOL
