this chapter really reminded me of things i appreciate in the manga industry... like yes, creators often work outrageous shifts to the detriment of their health, but that's true of a lot of jobs in japan lol. not that that's a good thing, but when your options are slaving to death anonymously for some random finance company and slaving to death bringing your artistic vision to the world, manga really isn't so bad?
also, i just love that the industry is set up that a 42 year old man who spent the last ??? years literally underground can pop up and get an appointment with a major manga publisher and have their work read and assessed by a professional editor. there really isn't any equivalent in other artistic industries, where you basically have to be well-connected or lucky to get any opportunity. via this opportunity, there's thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of manga artists across japan that are making decent livings just drawing comics for different magazines week by week or month by month. i think that's beautiful.
