New chapter just dropped -- "there it is!".

Kimura's story is interesting because he's been down there for over 25 years and now that he's returned to the surface, he's found that the world's left him behind. He shows up a few times in future chapters so his story doesn't end here. He falls in love with the woman at the Oobanyaki shop because she's nice to him and held his hand in hers when she gave him change. This custom is a pretty well documented and much discussed topic in a society where people are pretty hands-off with each other. I remember reading an account about a muslim Indonesian student who was with her class on a trip in Japan and she was super-flustered because the male shopkeeper gave her change back by propping her hand up from underneath with one hand while giving her the coins with the other.

The Japanese ice block candy which you split in half - total marketing genius. Chubet, chupetto, chu-chu, pokkin aisu...it becomes a social treat which you can share with your friend, kid, girlfriend, etc. by splitting it in half with them. Yeah, I remember when I was a kid sharing candy and drinks with my dad when we went out, those were some pretty special times for me... T_T

Last chapter of the volume is next. It's a good one which seems to have good timing with the New Year IRL and then we'll move onto Volume 4. There are 12 volumes left so the journey ahead is quite long.

TL commentary: I'm thinking of writing a section about translating in some chapter threads for people learning Japanese who are reading this in the future.
When I started out learning Japanese, I heard people around me saying that kanji was the hardest part. Others said it was expressions, especially those from different dialects or regions. I actually think it's stuff like slang and cultural references being integrated into everyday speech used as in-jokes and whatnot. The "there it is" thing in this chapter tripped me up a bit and I had to think a little in order to come up with an expression which had a similar tone and feel. それな!答えでたなぁ、答えっスね shows up a lot and gets played around with by everyone and then eventually subverted by the Foreman and the narrator near the end of the chapter. I think it's pretty neat if you can read the raws.

The change thing looks like this. Some clerks prop your hand up to steady it and give you your change with the other hand. Must be nice?

Another super comfy chapter~ Good luck Kimura-san!
And also thanks for these notes in the comments, I'd definitely be interested in your insights in learning Japanese too as a relatively beginner learner.

For me, they're imawagayaki and chuchubar... I was surprised that we got 4 ways of calling the latter in the chapter and still none of them exactly matched what I grew up with lol
