I think it wants to live as a human with the elderly man at the end of chapter 34. It says to Iris that it's name is Heyra (even though its original name was Kumiho) while looking affectionately at him. Based on the information we were given, it was attacked by the hero party 60 years ago (likely when it lost the orb). He probably nursed it back to health and gave it that name.
