Man they might be some real assholes and until now were our main antagonists, but I can't help but feel a little bad. This entire time even they were just being used.

It would be really nice if the demon queen actually had a solid agenda and goal, with plans to work toward that goal. As it is, it hardly feels like she's doing anything worthwhile. She's just reacting to stuff that happens. On the other hand, the empire is a nest of vipers where every person is only working for his own benefit, so it's impossible to understand where it's heading if anywhere. If it had only been the empire helping Ray to gather the lost powers from the students, it would have been simpler. I guess that's still going on, but there's no real drive to get it done.
