I’m confused on the grandson thingy

If I had to guess, he probably is going senile, possibly something like dementia which, aside from the obvious tragedy inherent in such degenerative diseases, could also mean that he's going to end up dying relatively soon.
Of course, I might just be seeing/assigning darkness where there is none.
