I hate Koga Ryoichi for making me translate all those untranslatable jokes!! I had way too many drafts. One of those for Tomo’s invention said Yomi Sucks / Yomi’s fat. For Tomo's pervo-scope, I could have gone with "I wanna see a planetary body!; Hey! This is nothing but a perverted body!".
I genuinely don't know which was better...

I don't think you needed to replace the character jokes with different ones. Sure, them being Japanese-based humor makes them less intuitive to understand, but I don't mind that, and your explanations were sufficient to get the point of the joke across without needing to redo it!

(This is all praise, by the way. Not dissing your work at all.)

Thank you! I love getting praised!
Though, I do believe that translating jokes is an important process, making it way more enjoyable for the reader (especially in comedy focused stories). Only giving an explanation might make the reader go "Hmm, Yes it is quite an interesting joke that is portrayed here 🧐", but it won't make them laugh.
Funny first, Serious second!

Fair enough! Not the stance I'd take, as I believe portraying the author's intent to be more important, but I understand the decision!
