liking a person or not has no bearing on having a physical attraction, and emotions are inherently fickle. Real life isn't so black and white and we can see see his emotional attachment to the memories of a childhood friend and his constant rationalization
tldr: kinda reductive what you're saying, I'd say it's the girl being the weird one
and yeah I know the author probably didn't think this through much and just mashed plot together :/
