@Thrembs Haha, it just means he stopped pursuing Mayu. You can't just simply decide to stop liking a person you fell for. He still likes her, but he's trying to forget his romantic aspirations. That's just how it goes. It's much easier, for a normal person at least (not one of those NTR types), to let it go when it turns out the other person likes someone else, but it's still not a 1-bit switch. If Kei had a new crush, it would be considerably easier.

Don’t think he ever liked her as much as he originally thought. It specifically says that he was trying too hard to fit how he felt into socially acceptable boxes. He made the decision without regret.
Also, yes, you can choose to stop feeling a way. Just gotta find peace with that decision. That’s not always possible, but often is.

@Thrembs I'll agree with you if, indeed, he didn't like her romantically quite as much as he originally thought for all that time. In that case, he would get over it considerably easier, true. It's just that he seemed to like her enough to cry for the first time after his mother's death when Asuka made him admit to himself that it was real love. So, at least it did have some depth.
