If he has little fighting experience, and we are talking about adventuring in the wilds, the dude should carry a spear. While there's spear mastery, an amateur is still greatly helped by the long reach and simple but effective moves that come pretty naturally. A sword wielding opponent, or a monster of equal or lesser range, can't do anything before they have already been well within a spearman's striking distance.
