I guess the dude is pretending to be dead then. maybe he figures it's an opportunity to take the girl and get out of the prince's influence. As it is,he's pretty much deserted. I also figure he'll get his body back, but who knows. Maybe it needs to be done before the day of the rewind to avoid it becoming permanent.
