Yeah, that description is a freaking spoiler....

I will follow for now, but if they start to push that dumb comedy act too forcefully I will drop.

The description is better albeit a little bland. The art on this is top tier tho. I am excited. Overgeared is overgeared.

I've binged about the first 150 chapters within the span of the the past day. I've been meaning to read it after having bookmarked it years ago. First several chapters were a slog to get through

@ShinGetsu Rather than being edgy, I think being dumb and impulsive was his biggest issue for the first several chapters. I feel like him being selfish and untrustworthy of people is pretty appropriate considering the way he's been treated throughout his youth. Him getting burned for trusting someone is pretty much the impetus for his first character change

Oh, a manga of Overgeared.
I need to warn you readers : Grid (The MC) is absolutely unsufferable during the 80-90 first chapters of the WebNovel. He is edgy, greedy, act scummy, can't trust anyone, only think of himself, got misplaced pride and is overall petty. He grows up BIG TIME at some point (he suddenly pull a 180° for a good reason), and gradually changes for the better (the WN tends to insist a bit too much on this, it's a bit annoying when secondary characters starts saying every two chapter "oh look at how much he has grown") even if he has still some sparks of his old personality. He is a bit different from the standard Korean MC, and he really is annoying for the whole first part. But that really gets better with time. Author writing also improved as the story progress.

Also, you won't see the armor he wears in chapter 1 for a long time...

A good point, I'd say, is that the secondary characters doesn't feels bland. And the girls aren't just pretty flowerpot either.

@Squildo Fair enough, been a while since I read it. He still isn't a good character during the whole beginning however. I really disliked him until he changed.

What you mean to say, Grid is interesting at the beginning, and then becomes completely gross, worthless and boring later on.

Remember to drop it the second the story turns into a shonen "let's all be friends and care about each other even though I'm so much better than all of you" tripe, everyone. Go read Dragonball, Naruto, One Piece or Fairy Tail again if you need more of that childish fantasy.

Edit: (My god, his game "friends" only care about him so they can use him for their own material gain. If he hadn't won the lottery, they wouldn't give two shits about him. That's some cynical stuff, saying that's "getting a better personality".)

I really like this series. I'm following the Novel very closely (800+ Chapters now) and it's one of the few novels I'm keeping up with the daily chapter release. Grid honestly was one of the few characters where I saw great major character development and it was gradual (not super sudden). Maybe he's a jerk at the beginning, maybe he does improve later on. But if you follow this series, you'll see that he is himself still and that because of how the series developed, he grew up along with it. I'm not sure if the adaptation will capture this well but I hope it does because it's one of my favorites.

> stuck carrying bricks on construction sites ... so doing every job/labor for money?
> VR Capsule
> little sister in high school
and someone said, "won the lottery".

This sounds like its..."inspired" by "The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor" or is it the other way? Please tell.

I've read up to chapter 830 on WuxiaWorld and up to volume 47 or so of LMS. It has been some time since I've read LMS, so my recollections might be a bit hazy.

Obviously, LMS came first and some aspects of OG were likely inspired by LMS, but I actually prefer Overgeared to LMS as a whole.

I've written more below, but as some of it deals with future parts of the story albeit in a non-specific manner, I've enclosed it in a spoiler tag.

Grid, as a character, can be a bit annoying to start with. He whines about how unfair the world is and refuses to take personal responsibility for his actions, but as the story progresses he begins to change his outlook on the world. I've gone back and reread the story from the beginning a few times' and in doing so, grown to appreciate his character progression.

Grid doesn't completely flip his personality from the beginning, but the difference is noticeable. He's been humbled by his experiences, but still has enough of an ego not to allow himself to be stepped upon. He has enough confidence to know what he excels at and to work on his weaknesses. He's able to recognize the contributions of others and reward them accordingly. When he does act like a scumbag, he's at least self aware enough to feel bad and make amends. I don't see him going from one extreme to the other, but rather becoming a better adjusted individual who still has some quirks.

His out of game life at the start isn't pointlessly tragic as commonly happens in Korean novels. Things aren't looking grim for the sake of it. A lot of the things wrong in his life are the result of his own actions. As someone noted earlier, Grid is impulsive, which leads him to do things that weren't well thought out. Grid's in debt because he spent a ton of money on an expensive gaming capsule without the means to pay for it. His parents are alive and they scold him because they see him wasting his life away as most Asian parents would. He seemingly doesn't have any future prospects because he dropped out of university and he doesn't have a steady source of income because he's saddled with debt due to his gaming addiction. His poor social life is linked to the fact that he's got no job/money and all he does is play video games all day.

I think a major difference between OG and LMS is how author's treat "NPCs" in the VRMMO. From what I remember, there aren't any significant NPC characters that stick around for a while in LMS (aside from sculptures/pets). OG takes the approach that the NPCs are equal to players in their importance. They have their own motivations/desires and play major roles in Grid's story beyond just being quest givers. That isn't to say that Grid only parties with NPCs, but that they're more than just window dressing.

Plot progression seems smoother than LMS as well. There were many times in LMS that I skimmed over passages or even skipped them because progression ground to a halt and got boring. Obviously the scale between the two novels is significantly different since each one of LMS's chapters is drastically longer in comparison, but I've reread OG 3+ times at this point and I've completely dropped LMS. I enjoy that OG resolves things in a timely manner and doesn't linger too long on them. Some plot points are set up arcs in advance and revisited at a good pace. I can't recall off the top of my head any arcs that overstayed their welcome to any significant degree.

On a side note, Grid's not as ugly as I was led to believe. I suppose it makes sense, but its kinda interesting as well.

In the end, it will always come down to the individual preference as to which story is better, but I don't think enough has been released thus far to warrant completely discounting this adaption. I can't say if this is an entirely accurate comparison, but you could liken the OG & LMS to Sanderson & GRR Martin/Rothfuss. Sanderson's more known for plot progression and digestibility of his stories, while Martin & Rothfuss have more complicated plots with "witty" word play/banter. Maybe LMS could be considered more well written, but OG is an accessible story that readers can enjoy without as much investment.

Even for those that don't like the novel might find this version more palatable to their tastes. There have already been some departures from the novel in the 5 chapters released thus far, so its hard to say how things will translate and whether nor not the manhwa format will elevate it or not.

@IronDoge
Shonen is a rough word to summarily describe this as the continued acts of the story progress, grid essential start to recognize people as people instead of threats however he still uses them as much as they use him, essentially the only "people" he treats extremely favorably are his rival and khan. He makes friendly with a lot of people but he still only give them an advantage over other people by allowing them to have access to his skills, he still charges them like anyone else he would so he's not super "Lets all be friendly!" especially considered how the Olympics go.

As for everyone else I'm a bit on chromaticleaf's side i've read both and am up to date with OG too, grid is a character who's draw is his advancement as a person, the only thing with this comic so far is i think the artist have trouble expressing early grid, who like weed wasn't very attractive, more so grid as he has terrible hygiene and eating habits at the beginning of the story and is described as rather thin and his overall negative personality combined with his lack of fashion sense makes him seem (to me) like a dorky guy with a haggard face (due to the poor health and stress). As the story progresses he gets more confident and he makes health changes but that'll be a few dozen chapters later (about 100 chapters into the WN so maybe 60-70 depends on how much is compressed). And grid really doesn't win anything for free in fact it's mentioned even now in the story how terrible his luck is, he's like LMS in both have high persistence, so if you want to read this but don't like this character arc type then building up chapters and reading it in burst might make you feel better about it's progression later but his early behavior and style will follow LMS until a certain event down the line.
