My take is rather that the old man was the actual ghost anyway, so he might have ascended from it, or gotten beaten up or anything. Hard to tell, really.

Given that the newer work leans heavily into the supernatural you might not be wrong, but also I would not doubt this author to make the old man be telling the truth and MC be stuck there. Maybe in a doujinshi somewhere lol
