As for age gap romance, to my knowledge mangakas won't do this(1st they are pussies 2nd not a popular theme). Usually they will create a convoluted explanation why she wanted all of this and in the end they will leave as friends with some mutual understanding. But i might be also wrong so who knows?

Wild speculation since the Official online raws are up to 37, while the translation is up to 19, but I'm sure it's going to be revealed that she's mute because of some trauma and the cop reminds her of or maybe even is the person that saved her before. Also, assuming she's not being dishonest, she's 18 and can do what she wants, but more than that, the wild age gap is the whole reason the inspector is trying to keep her at a distance and dissuade her from loving him. The fact that the relationship is a little coercive, but it's the young one who is doing the coercion is the whole joke.

I gotta say that new chick is annoying to such a high degree. She has a point but the author made sure to write her in the most annoying way possible to go about it to ensure you just hate the chick.
I just don’t see the appeal. Even if she is 18, that’s 22 years, still extremely weird even if it is legal. And the story could’ve had the premise of the cop trying to keep her away for literally any other reason while keeping them within a reasonable age range. Could’ve even made the cop 19 and her 17 with the same premise that she’s too young. At least then it would’ve been normal

With all the weird stuff in manga this is pretty tame. Pretty sure age gap itself it popular in some circles. There is even quite a few where the guy is 18 and the woman is much older. Think the premise was the the teacher being his teacher back when he was younger and it was a crush he just never got over.
