I remember the one shot of Nisekoi is like that. The girl is smarter than the guy when it comes to grades. The guy is an overachiever and gets frustrated when he's 2nd and thinks the girl antagonizes him on purpose. But then in serialization, he became a typical harem MC who's supposed to be average but get all the girls because he's nice.

Another one I can think of is a light novel I don't remember the title of. An adult guy got reincarnated back to his kid self so he was treated as a genius as a kid. The "real" genius girl got frustrated when they were kids and always challenges him and lose. However, as they move up grades, the guy is gradually left behind as he's not really a genius while the girl continues to move up (winning competitions and etc).
