I feel he may have cheated on her, or she cheated on him, and their break up ended very messy for her. So she regretted it, and looked for a do over.

Nah man. There's no such thing as "a bit too dark" in stories. But its just a possibility. There's a lot of manhwa and manga with "that" premise. So its not weird if the author would adapt it in his/her writings.
