Also remember that you can manage your speed when going down a hill by shifting to a lower gear. People advise it to decrease wear on the breaks if you regularly drive down mountains. It also helps to avoid overheating and warping the breaks.

@thedude Though, from what I've heard, going too low is also possible, since as you drop in gears, engine resistance increases which puts more stress on the engine. But, in general, a combination of lower gear and tapping on the brakes is enough to prevent that smoky smoky coming-down-the-ski-hill smell of burnt brake pads.
