They exist because they make things unnecessarily difficult in romantic settings. Create drama when there shouldn't be any in the first place. Also cause misunderstandings.

In my opinion, unless it's done really well, misunderstandings are the laziest way to create drama in romantic settings. They really are. I cringe for the most part on them.
